Flat lays are the perfect way to showcase your creativity. You can use all sorts of props in order to showcase and make your main feature item pop. Here are some tips on how to create the perfect flat lay to make it Instagram worthy. I love doing these because they are somewhat easier than shooting an outfit. You have free range and can change things at any moment which is somewhat hard to do when you are out taking photos of an outfit. You can also use this to help grow your photography skills!
Pick A Focus Item.
This can be a pair of shoes, lipstick or a item from an outfit. This will be the focus of your flat lay and everything else is apart of the background element. I chose these beautiful Fuschia spiked Sam Edelman Flats from Nordstrom. They are a very bold color which make them a great piece to focus on. They are super fun and comfortable which is why I love them.
Choose Background Elements.
I chose a pair of Kendra Scott earrings, a magazine and Marc Jacobs blush compact for my arrangement. You can practically use anything. I’ve used confetti before or you could even use flowers and a matching purse. You want your background elements to be complimentary but make sure that they don’t outshine the focus item. I chose a pretty neutral color pair of earrings, a black blush compact and a white magazine. All the items possessed neutral colors which does not take away from the focus item, just adds dimension.
Have Fun Arranging!
This is the fun part. You get to design the layout and make magic happen. It takes me a few tries before I get it perfect but once you know its correct a little light bulb will go off and you will run to get the camera. When you get ready to take the photo make sure you are able to get above the flat lay high enough to get everything in the shot. I try to make it so the items create a perfect rectangle in the camera frame or a square (if using an IPhone). That is so it is easy to upload on Instagram without sacrificing parts of the photo.
Have fun creating! I would love to see what you have put together so tag me on Instagram @sparklingsoutherner and I can see all of your beautiful creations!!
